Silly Songs is a great set of goofball hits guaranteed to paste grins on 4-year-old faces. Never mind that the songs are not originals and that (outside of the few that include Mickey, Minnie, and Goofy), you've never heard of the singers crooning them. These loopy chestnuts--"Purple People Eater," "Bill Grogan's Goat," "On Top of Spaghetti"--have sunk themselves so deeply into grownup funnybones that anybody who refuses to reel with the feelin' on "Splish Splash" should be ready to be outed as a grump. Better still, this record seals the deal on wacky bonding experiences. Kids who have never played "The Name Game" or screamed for ice cream, get set: one spin of this, and parents will be shouting "Ta Ra Ra Boom De Ay."

Disney's Princess Lullaby Album shines light on a key children's release from 2001: Jason Falkner's Bedtime with the Beatles collection. The arrangements here are dripping with keyboards and swathed in strings, but the simple formula--translating familiar melodies and mellowing the music to sweet, soporific levels--works well. And, to be fair, these aren't Beatles tunes. But the Disney songs are recognizable enough that the youngster in need of music as a sleep aid won't be, so to speak, in the dark. Even if films like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and, to a greater extent, Mulan, aren't known quantities, Fred Mollin's orchestrations are soothing. Yes, the set will seem monotonous to adult ears, but this can take a nice, mellow spot alongside Disney Babies Lullaby in the twilight rotation.

    The trouble with most all-instrumental lullaby collections is that the second they're removed from their crib-side setting, they become indistinguishable from elevator music. Given that the contemporary melodies Disney chose for Lullaby & Goodnight (the Beatles, James Taylor and Cat Stevens) are adapted, the track listing alone makes it seem particularly vulnerable. But it isn't. Credit Fred Mollin, who produced and performed all 12 tracks and served as arranger on most, artfully selecting where to gently plunk a piano key and softly strum a harp along the way. Soothing, simple, and set adrift on an unmistakable sea of tenderness, Lullaby & Goodnight will sandbag any adult who has ever known the pleasure of watching an infant drift off. Note, if "Puff the Magic Dragon" never made you cry before, prepare to get misty this go-round.

Instrumental albums from Walt Disney's mega-empire are a rarity. But judging from the excellence of Disney's Lullaby Album--from the superb arrangements to the surprise song choices--you'll probably be hearing more of them. Producer and arranger Fred Mollin exhibits not only good taste and restraint in his approach, but his song choices sweetly complement one another. Treading the fine line between Muzak and genuinely soothing music, Mollin lands softly and sentimentally on such Disney movie song classics as "Baby Mine," "When You Wish upon a Star," and "Stay Awake/Feed the Birds," as well as on other chestnuts such as "Brahms Lullaby" and Kenny Loggins's "House at Pooh Corner." The real delights, though, are the Beatles' "I Will" (rendered beautifully on piano and strings), Louis Armstrong's timeless "What A Wonderful World," the classic "Beautiful Dreamer," the old doo-wop favorite "Good Night My Love (Pleasant Dreams)," and an inspired reprise of "Brahms Lullaby" joined with Gershwin's "Someone to Watch over Me." Complete with sleeping tips from psychology professor Jodi Mindell, Disney's Lullaby Album almost guarantees that you'll fall asleep before the baby does--for all the right reasons.

Because parents can lug the cable box only so far, in 2001 Disney struck upon portability for its block of preschool programming with the Playhouse Disney album. It featured film clips from series like The Book of Pooh and Bear in the Big Blue House to reconnect kids with their favorite programs. The arrival of Playhouse Disney 2 should be greeted with the same giddiness and ants-in-the-pants anticipation as a new season of shows. Sure, chances are the kids for whom this disc is cued will already have caught the cooperation-themed episode of "PB & J Otter" that spawned the chirpy "All Together We Can Build It" and the multi-culti installment of Bear from which "It Takes All Kinds" was extracted, but here the lyrics come through clearer. And the rejiggered roster, which includes the Wiggles, will attract new recruits.

I have a six-year-old daughter who's been raised on jazz and classical music (and loves both), but second grade has introduced her to pop music, too. Not being a big fan of the stuff you hear on the radio, I thought this might be worth a try, and my daughter and I both love it. She wakes up to it in the mornings, and it puts us both in a happy, energetic mood. Some of the songs are upbeat remakes of Cinderella, Arial, and Belle's songs from their respective movies, and there's even two remakes of "classic" pop songs---Walking on Sunshine and We've Got the Beat. I like it because the music is fun, but it also has very positive lyrics that are good for a girl's self-esteem. Somewhat surprisingly, I highly recommend this CD for girls from six to 14 or 15.

Rarely has an album surfaced with this much raw ability to repel dads, pesky little brothers, and teens with reputations to protect. Disney's "House of Mouse" replaced "MouseWorks" a couple years ago on Disney's One Saturday Morning. The show takes place in the local Disney 'toon nightclub in Main Street, Toontown. The scripts skillfully put Disney's classic characters all together for the first time, resulting in some very funny situations. For instance, Snow White is horrified when she is served a shiny red apple and Iago from "Aladdin" joins forces with a band of other Disney birds to perform "Parrots of the Carribbean", a takeoff on the classic Disney parks ride "Pirates of the Caribbean".

This CD is the result of many of the wacky and upbeat musical numbers that take place during the show. The whole Disney music spectrum is covered, with everything from "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" to "Bibbidi, Bobbidi, Boo", "The Three Caballeros" to "Grim Grinning Ghosts" being performed by some of the most unlikely Disney characters. This cd is a real blast and rounds out any Disney music collection.

Eva Cassidy's soul-scraping rendition of Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready" sounds right at home here, as do Bill Withers's "Lean on Me," Nita Whitaker's "Climb Every Mountain," and Art Garfunkel's "Bridge over Troubled Water" (still, a caveat's in order--the live version's a clunker compared with the original). Though Barry Mann's title track commands a sober, sincere liftoff for this collection, it comes across more as cobbled together for commercial purposes than as heartfelt; its polar opposite is Willie Nelson's achingly gorgeous "American Tune," also included here. Once Kaci issues the final salute with "Star Spangled Banner," what seems most American about America! is its cross-genre approach: plant this musical melting pot in backyards across the country and at least a song or two will grow on everybody.
