Disneymania	Without so much as a squeak from the Mickey Mouse Club in decades, Disney had to rally its devotees one way or another, and who better to whip them into a frenzy than the artists gathered here? Disneymania delivers a clutch of bubblegum confections bent on causing more 'tween drooling than a trip to the orthodontist. Highlights on a collection that only occasionally dips into Disney's pre-1980s catalog include the A-Teens' frothy "Under the Sea," 'N Sync's polished "When You Wish upon a Star," Jump 5's fuel-injected "Beauty and the Beast," and the Baha Men's bouncy "Hakuna Matata." Disney purists may pout over these remakes--it's tough to argue with Phil Collins's "You'll Be in My Heart" or Elton John's "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"--but improving on classics wasn't the point. (Did you really expect one to accompany this straight-to-video sequel?) But that's alright. Ladysmith Black Mambozo (on two tracks), Angelique Kidjo (who contributes the album's best original song, "We Are One"), and a duet between Kenny Lattimore and Heather Headley account for the starpower here, and all are strong. But the real essence of this collection is the African-flavored pop of tracks like "I Want to See the Moon," on which both your children and yourself might be introduced to some great new sounds. (There's a great, if slower than you'll be accustomed to, version of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," too.) As both a soundtrack and an introduction to an entire sound, Simba's Favorites is a success. Monsters Inc : Scream Factory Favorites	Scream Factory Favorites sends a gusty second wind blowing around the Monsters, Inc. gang so that they seem never to have clomped off the screen. Credit Riders in the Sky, a cowboy-musician collective of four spiffy if over-the-hill-looking fellows, for twanging up these 13 tracks, instead of letting them go sappy or scary or in any way serious. Randy Newman's movie-derived buddy song, "If I Didn't Have You," the opener, lights a low flame beneath happy-to-be-stuck-with-you sensibilities before a run of crackup wordplay kicks in: "Doo-Wah Diddy Diddy (Mike's Song)" gets a Cyclops-specific reworking ("She looked good, she looked fine / I could not believe my eye"); "I Only Have Eye for You" oozes mush to a "scream come true" whose "kisses taste like glue"; and "Monster ABCs" fondly recalls a school-kid chorus--"A is for Aah!, E is for Eek!," etc. "Lullaby for Boo" breaks from the bogeymen, but, besides a couple of swingin' instrumentals, the rest is pure Disney-Pixar monster mash. It won't deliver you to specific movie scenes the way soundtracks sometimes do, or, spooks aside, send chills up your spine, but it does stand to lift your spirits. It's a forget-your-troubles frolic fit for all ages, and it won't fail to tickle the funny bone of anybody who walked out of the movie feeling less foolish about sleeping with the closet door clamped shut, flashlight in hand. Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea	Return to the Sea neatly picks up where the original Little Mermaid soundtrack left off. The opener, "Down to the Sea," is an uplifting anthem peppered with sweet-voiced musings from Ariel (Jodi Benson) about her aquatic hurdles and accomplishments. "Tip and Dash" is a feisty number by the title fish, transformed here into Titanic Tip and Daring Dash, who "dare dastards to put up their dukes" and warn barracudas that the duo's about to save the day. And "For a Moment," an affecting heart-warmer, is a mother-daughter duet about the grandness of the sea and what it means to be of the water. "For a moment," croons Ariel's daughter, Melody, gorgeously, "part of me is alive and at home in the sea/Life is cool as I'm asplash in the world's biggest pool." Her sole wish, though, is that her mother could watch her soar and shine. This record presents only one other original track, "Here on the Land and Sea," alongside four familiar favorites that fit comfortably with the mermaid theme. "Iko Iko," "Octopus's Garden," "Give a Little Love," and "Hot, Hot, Hot" are all performed by Samuel E. Wright (Little Mermaid's Sebastian), who deftly delivers each tune in his rich, island-reminiscent style. What's most enjoyable about this soundtrack is its brevity--it doesn't try too hard or reach too far, instead leaving listeners with a simple, pleasing reminder of the movie's uplifting message and clever, completely Disneyesque characters. Woody's Roundup (A Rootin'-Tootin' Collection of Woody's Favorite Songs)	When the makers of Toy Story 2 went looking for a story that Woody could own in the celebrated sequel, they settled on thickening the plot by making Woody the former star of a 1950s-era television variety show. In the wake of the film's success, Disneyland launched an immensely popular variety show spinoff featuring some of the music on Woody's Original Roundup. Subtitled A Rootin'-Tootin' Collection of Woody's Favorite Songs, this imaginary soundtrack to a fictional TV show is spiritedly played by cowboy band Riders in the Sky. The songs are compact ditties that kids will fall in love with--especially the title track, the darling "Jessie, the Yodelin' Cowgirl," and the hit "You've Got a Friend in Me." In fact, parents who've grown weary of Ariel and Simba on repeat play will find the Trinidad and Tobago Showboat Orchestra's renditions thankfully exotic and festive.

I listened. I strode over to the music section. "What is this delightful music I hear? I must have it!" And so I did, and so should you! In the accompanying lesson booklet, Shirley Fleming asks: "What accounts for that elusive thing called style? What makes one composer's music different from another's? ... The music 'paraphrased' here covers three centuries and close to a dozen countries. It gives us a bird's-eye view of a very wide range of musical personalities, and - as you will hear - each has his own distinctive voice." The composer/arranger/conductor of this wonderful CD, Donald Fraser, says: "This collection brings together two magical worlds: the world of Disney and the world of classical music. The album fulfills a wish I've held for some 15 years - to help introduce today's audiences to classical music via some of the most familiar and beloved melodies in movie history." Educational factor aside, this CD is just plain fun! The arrangements are rich and lush. My favorite is Heigh-Ho a la Mozart. Picture the Seven Dwarfs marching off to their daily toil in the mines as you listen to this on your morning commute! The Second Star to the Right chorale reminds me of the St. Olaf Choir when they're going fine! There's a Joplin-esque "Under the Sea" and a stirring "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" a la Tchaikovsky ( no 1812 canons, but some buildups come close!- Elton never did it this way!) and a spritely "Winnie the Pooh." Arranger Donald Fraser's adaptation of "Bella Notte," from Lady and the Tramp, is redone in the style of Erik Satie's three Gymnopédies; harmonies and pacing are adjusted to suit Satie's interplay of dark and light and the Disney melody is poignantly played atop the structure by sauntering flute and violin. Debussy's works, including "Clair de Lune," inspire the delicately ornamental piano flourishes heard on the rendition of "So This Is Love" from Cinderella. Piece by piece, from the Bach-inspired title cut to a Gregorian-chant version of The Lion King's "Circle of Life," these beloved songs are reevaluated, reinvented, and reaffirmed. But while there are about a hundred other Armstrong records that feature more inspired performances and arrangements, it's still an interesting, enjoyable disc. There's just something about songs like "Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah" and "When You Wish upon a Star" that delights kids of all ages. Armstrong's deep, graceful, unmistakable voice combined with his Dixie and traditional soloing par excellence make this a record worth owning for all fans of Disneyana. Disney's Der Gloeckner Von Notre Dame (1999 German Stage Version)	Music is so subjective. When I saw the animated movie, I didn't think it was that great; but I did enjoy the music. As I watched the movie again (and again), both the movie and the music grew on me. I bought the CD of the German production and immediately loved it. The new songs "Top of the World" and "Esmeralda" are marvelous. And, now I know how "Someday" was meant to sound. I've seen the 35-minute Walt Disney World Hunchback stage production over 25 times. It is outstanding. I love "Out There" and "God Help the Outcasts". Also, "A Guy Likes You" is a real winner and fits wonderfully into the show. Description from Amazon.com Customer Review
